Since the rate of available .com domains has been on the decline, Google has been coming up with new domain extensions to suit the emerging new markets. In respect to such developments, Google has announced the release date of the proposed .dev domain.

Just like the .app extension which was released earlier this year, .dev extension will also be released in the first quarter of the year. It has been developed to provide better documentation and showcasing of projects for different company's.
The 'Sunrise' period for .dev begins on January 16, where companies that own a relevant trademark can register for a domain. From February 19-28, registration opens up to everyone, but domains will cost more. The general availability period, where .dev domains will be priced normally, begins on February 28.
